Everyone likes charities. And frankly, those pledge drives they do on TV, are just boring. But then again I have sort of a skewed view on what's boring. Anyway if you like seeing gameplay videos, you should look up
Speed Demos Archive. They are a group of speedrunners (people who play through games really fast) who post their "runs" on youtube, twitch, etc. Through meticulous practice and game-breaking glitches, they attempt to play through a video game in as little time as possible. Have you ever played
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time? It can take almost 45 hours to complete if you don't know where to go. Can you imagine beating the game in 0.8% of the time!? The world record for OoT is 24 minutes! It be right here y'all:
BAM!

What does this have to do with charity you ask? Well I was getting to that. Stop interrupting.
The guys at Speed Demos Archive hold annual charity marathons, in the summers and winters, where they all live-cast themselves speedrunning all your favourite games! All the proceeds go towards charities such as the Prevent Cancer Foundation, a non-profit group that works to increase prevention and early detection through research, education, and community outreach. Their last marathon raised over 225,000 dollars!
Now they aren't asking you to pledge money without expecting anything in return. There are many, many prizes up for grabs during runs like posters, figurines, and game consoles!
So if you want to see people break video games over their knee, and support a good cause, check out
Awesome Games Done Quick 2014. It's this January from the 5th to the 11th.
Gotta go fast!

I always wondered how people just zoom through a game so quickly. It must take a lot of dedication and patience to be able to practically memorize the whole game.
ReplyDeleteI think speed runs of a game are pretty cool. Though most of non-live speed runs on youtube are TAS (Tool Assisted Speedruns). They're still really cool as you get to see some things you won't normally see. (cough younger link killing ganon)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point. The thing about SDA is that they only accept non-TAS runs. During their marathons they only use actual consoles. No emulators. It just takes a lot of practice and patience.
DeleteBluegrass is the coolest runner, even when he isn't running he is a crowd favourite.
ReplyDeletePortal speedruns are the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zoz-iFL3DC0 nice try kids
ReplyDeletePortal speedruns are the best. I'll try harder next time sir.
DeleteI like to run really fast to and that increases my speed or better known as velocity and then i can calculate my acceleration using ∆v/t if i know the time. I am really bad at speed runs because i like to enjoy the game instead of running to the end. "Life's (or in this case, the game) a journey, not a destination."

I always wonder how can they figure out all the routes and ways to beat the levels in the game. But what's the point of beating it so quickly when the point of playing games is to enjoy the game.
ReplyDeleteIt takes a long time to practice executing these speedruns. They don't always work out 100% of the time. Also the speedrunning community sort of crowd sources ideas and tricks that they've found. As for why people choose to speed run games... It's sort of like a sport for them.
